What is FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon)?

FBA is a service provided by Amazon where sellers store their products in Amazon’s fulfillment centers. Amazon handles storage, packaging, shipping, and customer service.

How it Works:

  1. You send your inventory to Amazon warehouses.
  2. Amazon stores your products safely.
  3. When a customer places an order, Amazon picks, packs, and ships it.
  4. Amazon handles returns and customer service.

Pros of FBA:

  • Prime Eligibility: Your products get the “Amazon Prime” badge, boosting visibility and sales.
  • Fast Shipping: Customers enjoy free 2-day shipping (or faster).
  • Amazon Handles Returns: Customer service and returns are managed by Amazon.
  • Scalability: You can focus on marketing and sourcing while Amazon manages logistics.

Cons of FBA:

  • Fees: Storage and fulfillment fees can add up, especially for slow-moving items.
  • Inventory Management: You need to keep track of inventory at Amazon warehouses.
  • Less Control: Amazon handles shipping, packaging, and returns, which limits your customization.

What is FBM (Fulfillment by Merchant)?

FBM is when you, as the seller, store, pack, and ship products directly to customers. You’re fully responsible for order fulfillment.

How it Works:

  1. List your products on Amazon.
  2. Store inventory in your own warehouse or home.
  3. Pack and ship orders to customers yourself.
  4. Handle customer service and returns.

Pros of FBM:

  • Lower Fees: You don’t pay Amazon’s storage or fulfillment fees.
  • Full Control: You control packaging, shipping speed, and branding.
  • Flexibility: No need to send inventory to Amazon warehouses.

Cons of FBM:

  • No Prime Badge: Products are not automatically eligible for Prime, which may reduce sales.
  • More Work: You manage packing, shipping, and customer service.
  • Shipping Responsibility: Late deliveries or shipping errors can hurt your seller rating.

When to Choose FBA

  • You want fast shipping and Prime eligibility.
  • You plan to scale your business quickly.
  • You prefer Amazon to handle customer service and returns.
  • You sell small or lightweight items that are cheaper to store in Amazon’s warehouses.

When to Choose FBM

  • You sell large, heavy, or slow-moving products.
  • You want full control over packaging and shipping.
  • You have an established fulfillment system or warehouse.
  • You want to save on FBA storage fees.

Conclusion

Both FBA and FBM have their advantages and drawbacks. Many successful Amazon sellers use a hybrid approach, fulfilling some products with FBA and others with FBM based on cost, size, and demand.
